The price is fair, considering the fact there are not many accommodations in its largely devastated central area. Our spirits were enlivened up and welcomed by the sight of many santa claus-run when we were transported direclt to the front entrance of our place of stay. As we arrived late and not knowing about restart community area in the proximity, we walked a distance of about 10 minutes to the nearest supermarket (buying instant noodles for breakfast prior the early next morning departure). Same intercity driver (who drove us to ymca from picton to christchurch on 5 dec and pick-us up nearby the following day) was kind and prompt in his delivery of transport service efficiently. He was knowledgeable and the sight of portly self was simply seeing a sight of santa claus at work. Just like 19 years ago when i first used intercity on my first visit, intercity coachlines drivers do not disappoint and they deliver us safely. .

Positives = clean spacious rooms, friendly staff, good parking, central to (what is left of) city centre and park, reasonable price. Negatives = very noisy in the mornings as every door closed sounded as though being slammed. Not great waking to vacuum cleaner either, i'd expect this to be after check out time. I wouldn't want to use the ktichen as tiny but at least there is a cafe downstairs for breakfast. The bathroom was a bit grubby even after cleaning!.

Room was spacious and clean. Bathrooms are unisex and not that many on each floor. The kitchen is tiny and there is really only one cereal bowl for the whole hostel. Apart from that our stay was great and we would stay at ymca again.

With most other places closed, the ymca is a convenient bolthole for quick visits to christchurch. I arrived quite late and had an early start, so was a bit concerned to know what time the coffee shop opened - the fellow on reception went out of his way to find out for me. The room is a bit bare, but is spacious and quiet.
