Was a bit concerned about howards mountain lodge as it was only after we had made our booking that i read the previous review. However i should not have worried, this place was great. The staff were extremely helpful and we didn't make it easy for them. Last minute date changes and very late arrival were no bother. We even locked ourselves out of the room at 1am but the chap (grant) wasn't put out by us knocking on the door and getting him out of bed for a new key - pretty sure i wouldn't have been so understanding ! skiing was excellent and really handy to rent the gear from the lodge and well priced too. Decided to stay on for the weekend but howards was booked out, annie took about 20 minutes to phone around trying to find us somewhere else to stay. Luckily during this time they got a cancellation so we could stay after all. Absolutely recommend howards, very good value for money and a well kept, clean place. I don't normally complain but this is one time i will. I read the reviews and thought the place couldn't be that bad, big mistake, it is and worse. I booked a double/twin bed room and asked specifically for a double bed on my internet booking. On checking in i found out i had a twin single but the lady was to busy to answer my questions and although i hovered later, still she was to busy with the ski shop etc, and then disappeared and i didn't feel comfortable making a fuss. Maybe they didn't have one and i was traveling alone so... Well i paid $109 for a tiny room with no tv, tea, coffee or even a glass in it. A backpackers?, sure, i don't mind paying but don't rip me off and this is a rip off. I could have paid $18 more and stayed in a 100% better place down the road, and i do wish i had. I spent the night after an exhausting drive down, mostly awake. I slept in the bed against the wall and it was so soft you fell off it, no joke, you cant even sit on the bed. In fact at one stage in the night i fell off the bed onto the floor and the mattress followed me and landed on me! i ended up shuffled up against the wall to try sleep. Sleeping in a plane is easier. It was noisy and i swear at 11pm and 2am someone was having a spa bath, there was this hum with vibrations going through the whole building, i was awake all night and i normally sleep like the dead. The rooms and whole place was warm, hot even and i had my bathroom window cracked, but the noise from the central heating kept waking me, trade off i suppose, i would rather have a heater or something i could control in my room, all us guests commented on the heat and the terrible beds, you guys really need to address this. Eventually at around 6am i gave up and went to find a cup of tea, everything was dark, the passageways, it was awful. The kitchen was great, spotless and spacious. The rooms too. I only found one lounge, who knows where the other was, you were pretty much left to it once you paid your money. No service at all,that i found anyway. It was like this complex where only the guests were around. The guests i met were great and kept the kitchen really clean. The parking was very tight, honestly, i could not recommend howard's at all.

Clean and friendly! however there was one little mishap when one roommate returned from a day of skiing to find her clothes on her bed had been thrown on the floor when room service was fixing up the sheets....but great place to stay!.

Standard triple room should realy only be marketed for backpackers. It was too small for me, my wife and child. Had to upgrade to a family unit, luckily there was a room available. This was more suitable, but still not "better than home". All-in-all, it was clean, tidy and comfortable.

We had great skiing that week, only one day out of 5 we didnt ski. there was NO radiator in our room and if there is central heating it WAS NOT turned on!

Going to have dis-agree about the other heating options, look at my power bills and still say they weren't on ? Again, sorry you didn't enjoy your stay.

The room was cold, so we asked for a heater- no go. we asked for extra blankets and got one each. the hole lodge was cold,even fire in main lounge area only lit in the evenings. cook breakfast was below par. be surprised if they got any return customers in the winter. we would not recommend this lodge to anyone

Sorry you had a bad experience with us but if 1 extra blanket isn't enough you should have said something. The fire is only light in the evening, people aren't here during the day and that would be a waste of fuel. There is also central heating and a radiator in your room so how you can be cold is beyond me. Also sorry the weather didn't ley you ski as much as you wanted and trip wasn't what you hoped but that isn't really our fault is it ?

Excellent, the room was clean and tidy with adequate heating, well supported with a clean and tidy community kitchen well equiped, and a cosy lounge.

If you're wanting to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing then this is a good place to stay - don't expect any frills but the room was clean and comfortable (and very quiet) with effective shower in en-suite bathroom - friendly, very efficient and knowledgeable staff who served a decent cooked breakfast and provided a packed lunch for the crossing and arranged transport to and from the track. If you're looking for somewhere that provides food and lodging for a short stay in the National Park then can recommend this place.

The room was cold and there is no heater at all! we asked for a heater and the manager didn't provide us with any so we ended up paying for another lodge that was much cleaner and warmer.

We had a great time, the place is clean and warm, ideal to rent all your gear at the lodge so you can drive up the mountain and start skiing straight away without queing for passes and gear etc. It was our second time at howards lodge and i am sure there will be more times to come, the kids loved it as well.
