The Chateau Tongariro sits nestled in the shadow of three towering active volcanoes, and at the very foot of the majestic and sacred Mount Ruapehu. The 800 square kilometre Tongariro National Park–a dual listed World Heritage Area – provides a stunning natural playground bursting with diverse landscapes for visitors to the Chateau to discover. With arid badlands, crater and alpine lakes, sparkling rivers, breath-taking lunar landscapes, lush rainforest and alpine meadows to be explored, staying at the Chateau Tongariro is an all-seasons, utterly unique experience not to be missed.

The Chateau itself - a fine example of neo-Georgian sophistication and refinement - is a Category One Heritage Building. Its lavish décor and furnishings, heavenly cuisine and superior standards of service, set against a backdrop of truly remarkable scenery, have created its legacy as a place of magic, refinement and romance unequalled throughout the country.

As you arrive at the Chateau, standing under the grand entrance portico, you know you are somewhere special. Before you, an active volcano looms, dramatic in its beauty. Inside, roaring log fires, the glow of grand chandeliers, sublime cuisine and spectacular mountain views await.

In winter and spring, you're literally minutes away from exhilarating ski slopes. Year round, you're on the doorstep of one of nature's finest playgrounds, amongst the world's finest wild trout fishing and at the doorstep of ‘New Zealand's best one day walk' - the acclaimed Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

The hotel presents 106 beautiful hotel rooms and 9 adjacent motel units, an excellent variety of restaurants and bars, a gym, sauna and hot plunge pool, tennis court, a cinema and the highest golf course in New Zealand.

Since early last Century, our guests have enjoyed service and ambience that is simply second-to none...

It's a Tradition.

  • Went for the package option and it was great. Was good to watch the cinema show of the changes that the chateau has been through (yes it has its own movie theatre downstairs). It had been on my bucket list to do and glad i did it. The staff were great and very obliging and not too fake about their tasks. 5

  • The room was supposed to be premium, but was tiny and shoved on the corner of the hotel. It was also freezing in there. The dinner was cold and not a good standard of taste considering the high prices. The swimming pool was down in a dingy basement with only one working light..it looked like something from a horror film. No parking, had to park on the street across the road. Bits of the hotel walls were crumbling away and mouldy. We paid $440 for a weekend away, and everything was a disappointment. I will be looking into a refund, because for $220 a night what we got was abismal. Won't be staying again. We had a nosy around motels that were of a much better standard and for a quarter of the price. 1

  • Enjoyed the warm cosy room, bathroom very clean and great views, only problem was no microwave to heat our food as we were unable to eat food from your restaurant due to cultural reasons. The duty manager was so friendly and helpful. 5

  • The Chateau is always a classic place to stay in! Could do with some modernisation, double glazing, soundproofing etc. The room was pretty cold (no extra heaters were available) but once under the blankets it was comfortable. A bit noisy from the corridors and people upstairs. 5

  • This is the 2nd time we have stayed. Both times in the old wing and by far it has an amazing charm. My one disappointment was that the disabled suite on the 3rd floor was quite small (the bathroom was big thou), and due to the room layout it was impossible to enjoy and get to the window in a wheelchair to enjoy the views. I will definitely be visiting again but next time I'll choose a suitable standard room with a more accessible view. But if you like a place with loads of charm and somewhere to just sit back and relax I haven't been to a better place... oh and I do recommend the high tea, and buffet breakfast... just divine... Thanks for some great memories 5

  • Dear Mr Haines Thank you for your comments. I have made a note of your requirements in your profile and would be happy to upgrade you on your next trip to the Tongariro Wing which might be more suitable. Feel free to take a look next time your hear. The High Teas are one of my favorites too. Kind regards Tony Abbott Resident Manager
