Dunedin's best kept accommodation secret!

A stay at Bygone Era Bed and Breakfast is to experience affordable luxury with a touch of elegance and a host who knows no bounds! Our attention to detail will ensure you'll feel welcome and at home and if you don't believe us, check out what our guests have to say on our website.

Situated in North Dunedin and minutes from the city centre on flat terrain (no Dunedin hills!), Bygone Era is close to all amenities and within walking distance of Ross Home and Hospital, Baldwin Street (steepest street in the world), Otago Community Hospice, Botanic Gardens, Knox College and the University of Otago. Off-street parking is available and public transport stops outside the gate.

We offer 3 elegant and well appointed private guest rooms packed with Edwardian architectural features and “to-die-for” luxury beds. Guests regularly compliment the sumptuousness and comfort of our beds and our biggest complaint is they hate getting out of them! Guest services are tailored to individual travelers needs.

Tariffs include a sumptuous cafe style breakfast served in the Dining Room with a beautifully set table featuring silver service and fine china.

The house doubles as an art gallery featuring NZ artists. Often the art creates an interesting topic of discussion amongst guests and there's always something interesting and unusual on offer. Most art is for sale.

Your host is Angela Tidey.

  • What a beautiful old house. The owner (and cat) made us feel most welcome - it was like visiting an old friend. Great breakfast and choice of options. Very comfortable, lovely, and warm room, the fire place was even set if we wanted to light the fire. Such soft sheets, a nice luxurious touch! A very beautiful home. The amount of work the owner has put in is staggering. While not all rooms are yet totally finished, its still a wonderful place to stay and I cant wait to see it completed. Thanks Angela :)

  • We absolutely loved staying in Angela's homely B&B. We were blown away by the vibrancy and warmth of the hostess. This home has a touch of old world luxury and charm, infact at all other places we stayed in in Dunedin we were wishing we were back here. The breakfast was amazing. The best eggs i'd had on our 8 day Sth Island trip and if you think about what breakfast costs for 2 at a cafe this luxurious B&B is very affordable. We highly recommend it and thank Angela for making our trip that much more special.

  • Noni Tidey - 08/01/2008 I stayed at Bygone Era in November and was overwhelmed by the friendliness, cleanliness and hospitality of this home. The bed was so comfortable it was hard to leave it to go sight seeing. Breakfast was tasty and wholesome and nothing was too much trouble for the host. Linda Keesing-Styles - 20/12/2007 I had the pleasure of staying at Bygone Era in early December and what a magnificent gracious home that is in the later stages of being lovingly restored. The owner is paying attention to every detail and the description of the house is spot on. Although restoration is not complete, our rooms were exquisite and the beds were to die for - best sleep in a very long time! Really like floating on a cloud. The hostess presented an absolutely divine breakfast and her hospitality was second to none. Once renovation is complete, I'd have no hestitation in rating this a 10. Top Notch!
