The heart of the Martinborough wine village

Established in 1882, The Martinborough Hotel is a historic retreat offering luxury, boutique accommodation near Wellington, at the heart of Martinborough Wine Village - one of New Zealand's finest wine destinations. Martinborough is a quirky little village of just 1300 people, encircled by 30 vineyards – most of which are within walking distance from the hotel - and with a leafy square at its heart. This picturesque wine village is situated in the Wairarapa region on the North Island, 75 minutes drive east of Wellington, and three hours south of Hawkes Bay.

Taking pride of place at the entrance to the square is The Martinborough Hotel. Developer Edmund Buckeridge described it in 1882 as "one of the finest hostelries ever erected in any inland town in New Zealand". The hotel hasn't forgotten its past, and it's that sense of history and place that will charm you as soon as you step in the front door - from the battered suitcase of a gentleman traveller at the top of the stairs, to the accommodation's sloping floors and olden day sketches of local personalities adorning the walls.

Today The Martinborough Hotel offers character, comfort and old style personal attention, making it ideal for a romantic weekend away, an indulgent escape or accommodation as part of a holiday or vacation. Diners in the richly decorated and refined hotel restaurant can enjoy the ever-changing menu of modern and contemporary food as well as a wide range of excellent wines produced within walking distance of the hotel. The Hotel's famed Bar with its collection of memorabilia and historic photos provides comfortable space where locals and guests alike can pull a chair up to the grand antique oak table or gather round one of the wine barrels in front of the cosy fire.

At The Martinborough Hotel choose from sixteen individually designed guest accommodation rooms to suit your mood. Indulge in the elegant surroundings of one of our nine Verandah Rooms, located at the top of the grand flight of stairs in the original 1882 building. Or take a wander through the pretty courtyard just beyond the lobby and enjoy the tranquillity of seven spacious Garden Rooms finished in a restful simple country style.

Whether you choose a historic Verandah Room or the more contemporary feel of a Garden Room, there's utmost comfort throughout. Plump armchairs, fine quality bed linen, our special range of toiletries and of course a very comfortable bed.

PARKING: Off-street car park.

  • Lovely room and balcony and building. Was surprised though to see tv in our room was circa 1983 and not a flat screen. Also surprised that there was not a proper enclosed duvet cover on duvet inner, it was just tightly encased by two sheets, upon waking up in the morning i had the bare duvet inner against my face - use duvet covers please - i think its just lazy housekeeping. 5

  • The room was lovely, but the outdoor furniture on the verandah seemed to have been forgotten - it was badly in need of cleaning. The evening meal was very good though not outstanding. The staff were most obliging, fitting us in for dinner at short notice. Ian and marilyn - sept 2012. 5

  • Lived up to expectation of something unique and special. Nice friendly welcome. Highlight has to be evening meal; not only great food but also excellent service and comfortable surroundings. What a pity the hotel does not have a breakfast room as eating in the smelly bar while it is cleaned around you is a real come down. 5
