Lodge in the City offers spacious and comfortable backpacker and hostel accommodation at affordable rates.

We have a secure off-street car park which is an added bonus for an inner city hostel. We are within walking distance to Courtenay Place, the hot spot for nightclubs and shops. We are also very close to a major supermarket, Te Papa and other landmarks of interest around the city. We have a very sociable atmosphere with a large communal kitchen, dining and lounge area with Sky TV. We have brand new internet stations with Skype and headsets, and wireless access is also available. At reception we can fax, photocopy and print for a small charge. The hostel has laundry facilities on each floor and spacious clean bathrooms.

The choice of room types available include 4-10 bed dorms, twin rooms, double rooms and en suite family rooms.

  • Bit of a mixed bag in that the price we got it at was very good ($100 for 6 sleeping in self-contained unit) also the staff were very friendly and helpful. On the flipside like previous comments they didn't seem ready for us and had not cleaned our room that day. The room was tight but for the price reasonable. This place is a backpackers which generally means it's not suitable for families and is really just a place to shower and sleep at. The room was a bit grotty and the bathroom had broken taps and smelt quite bad. I was quite looking forward to being able to have a drink at the 'bar' that was advertised on the website only to be disappointed to find there was none. Overall good location, good price but hygiene and comfort was poor. 6/10 and will stay again with a bunch of mates because of the price and location. 1

  • Very disappointing, got there late in the afternoon, staff very friendly, but seems unprepared for us, asked how many people were staying, told us to pay again, although we booked and paid upfront. Then when we got to the room, it was very small, double bed with single bunk, not a double bed and single bed as advertised. There was not even enough space to put all our bags, and the room was scruffy, although the bedding was clean - holes in the door etc. My 72 year old father with a bad back was expected to sleep on the top of the bunk! he slept with my husband on the bed, i slept on the floor. The bathroom was a nightmare!! no further comment required. The other guests were extremely noisy. I will not be seen there again, and i suggest if you are thinking of staying there, contact them directly and make sure you are getting what is advertised!!. 1

  • Do not take kids.. We got to self contained unit.. Filthy, mince splattered throughout microwave, open can of pasta sauce in fridge and stunk! toilet door didnt close, bathroom was horrible! broken window repaired by slapping a piece of glass over top of hole which leaked when it rained! light wires hanging above beds (kids bunks). Had to carry 2 20kg bags a pram a 2yr old 2 back packs n a 6yr old down 3 flights of stairs because lifts are faulty!... I could go on and on! but staff are awsome.. Not for the family stay but if you want to join young tourists drinking all night this is your place!. 1

  • Well, where do I start? It was awful and nothing like what is on the website..Booked self contained unit for 5 but no oven, no bowls for cooking in the microwave, no light working in kitchen, no complimentary tea or coffee as advertised, lifts hardly ever work unless the door is kicked, horrible obscene graffiti on the inside door of the lift, door handle hanging by one screw, noisy drunken permanent guests take over every night and all through the night...On a positive note the staff on duty were extremely polite, helpful and very pleasant at all times...Shame they have to work in such a grotty environment as they deserve much better...Definately not recommended to anyone... 1

  • I work in the tourism industry (with backpackers) and strongly recommend you to find somewhere else to stay. Nothing in the advertising mentioned the need to book parking or that it costs - this extra cost bought the price up to close to the Mercure which has much nicer facilities. Parking is not easy to turn in - dont even consider it if you have a large vehicle. Ladies bathroom faults: One shower lined with lino and looks grotty (wear jandals!). Light bulb out above one shower. Taps dripping long term leaving marks on the basins. There is a product called Janola which would help with the mould in the bathrooms. Mens bathroom faults: Missing toilet cistern, only 2 out of 3 showers work and one of those had no shower curtain. Room Faults: Door would only close by slamming noisily (sorry to those we woke over night). Hole in the wardrobe. Graffiti inside lift is revolting - painting outside lift is cool. Would certainly not recommend for children. 1
