ARUHE is a Bed & Breakfast/Holiday Home in picturesque Whanarua Bay, on State Highway 35 and just over an hour's drive from Opotiki. State Highway 35 is renowned for its beautiful views of the ocean and uninhabited beaches. It's a road few know about and well worth the detour from the beaten track.

This sustainably built open-plan studio, with modern amenities, is surrounded by peace and natural beauty. ARUHE faces the Pacific Ocean and the view from the deck is framed by magnificent native trees.

A selection of breakfast ingredients are supplied for you to prepare at your own leisure. The kitchen cupboards hold most basic ingredients and if you plan to self-cater you will need to provide your own fresh ingredients. Opotiki and Gisborne are our nearest supermarkets. The kitchen has a large fridge, a freezer compartment, a two burner hob, a convection microwave and a Nespresso coffee maker for those who need their morning "fix". A comfortable king-sized bed sleeps two and a sofa bed can accommodate another one or two people. ARUHE is really only suitable for four as an overnight arrangement. Whilst the cottage is spacious for two, it is not quite so roomy for four.

Wifi is available but your mobile phone won't work here. There is no TV reception so it's a perfect opportunity to kick back, read that book you've been saving, beachcomb or relax in sun or shade.

The entire property is called Motuaruhe and it sits at the very edge of the Raukumara National Park and is far enough away from SH35 for guests to be untroubled by road noise and the occasional motorbike. Birdsong will waken you and continue to entrance you throughout the day.

  • Thank you Kim for a perfect stay, surrounded by the trees! Highly recommend Aruhe if you want to get away from it all and relax on the edge of the forest. Many thanks 5

  • Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I enjoyed meeting you both and appreciated your leaving Aruhe in TipTop condition. Of course, now we have sunshine and it's very hot today. I think Summer has arrived :-) Best wishes for the festive season and the New Year.

  • Great directions to Aruhe, Hostess Kim very helpful. Walking distance to Whanarua Bay and Macadamia Nut farm. Cottage has full kitchen and all amenities in beautiful setting. Cleaning fee made it rather expensive. 5

  • Glad you enjoyed your stay Geoff and Sheryl and thanks for your feedback. The cleaning fee compensates for stays of a single night where a lot of work is required to get the cottage ready for the next guests. Had you been staying longer, it may not have seemed so bad.

  • This was one of our best accommodations on our 5 weeks trip through New Zealand. Kim is a very helpful host and tries to suit every need of us. The apartment is very cosy and on the wooden outside deck in her beautiful garden we could spend weeks. 5

  • Archer is everything represented on the website yet so much more. Peaceful and serene and immersed in birdsong. Kim is an attentive yet discrete host, you will enjoy her presence. Opportunities for activity abound but loafing with a book iis 5

  • Thanks so much for the review Doug . Your spell checker obviously couldn't cope with ARUHE so we have Archer instead. Most amusing. I hope you had a great time in the Coromandel and getting home to cold(er) weather wasn't too much of a shock. I enjoyed meeting you both and appreciated your leaving ARUHE tidy. best wishes for the New Year!

  • Kim was a delightful host and very welcoming. Accommodation was of a high standard, in a rainforest like setting, with a delicious range of provisions provided for breakfast which we enjoyed on the balcony overlooking the ocean. Our only wish was that we could have stayed longer than one night. 5

  • HI there to you both. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip and that Hawkes Bay was a delight. Thank you so much for leaving ARUHE tidy and I appreciate your taking time to write this great review. If your friends are as awesome as you (and would like to visit), ask them to phone and book directly. I'll give them a discount. Have a wonderful Christmas and may all your wishes come true in 2019.

  • Kim has put great efforts and attention to detail into the high quality accomodation. It is a wonderful space to stay, spotlessly clean and well equiped with all you could want and more in a selfcontained studio. 5

  • We had a fabulous time at Aruhe. It really is paradise! Kim & KusKus were so welcoming and looked after us 100%. The cottage is luxurious, clean and very comfortable and the food supplied by Kim was fantastic - especially the fresh figs off the trees in the garden. It was a great place for our dog Bella who is traveling with us and we can recommend it as a base to visit the East Cape to be the first to see the sunrise! 5

  • Oh you do have a way with words Cath :-) Lovely review thank you. Thank you also for leaving ARUHE clean and tidy. I don't think anyone would have known Bella had been there. She's a lovely dog and I hope she brings you as much pleasure as Kuskus does me. Best wishes, K & Kk

  • We spent a few days at Aruhe after our wedding in January 2018. We love the surrounding area, Whanarua & Maraehako bays, diving, snorkelling, kayaking, bush walks etc, but wanted to stay in a private and peaceful place so we could rest and unwind. Aruhe was the perfect place as it is set back into the native bush. The deck has views through the puriri trees out to sea and you can see and hear kereru, tui and korimako. The kitchen was very well equipped with complimentary fresh fruit and veggies from the garden, wine and snacks. Comfortable outdoor furniture and couches, a large comfortable bed and nice linen. Kim, the host, was very generous and friendly while also allowing you privacy. We absolutely recommend this place. 5
