  • The room was tired and had been badly renovated. Bed was two singles pushed together and like sleeping on wooden planks. An air conitioning unit or extracror fan or something like that rumbled away all night, along with trains shunting in the yards. Do gourself a favour and stay somewhere else. 1
NICK PLIMMER - Jun 25, 2014 (Stayed Jun 2014) Travelbug verified review
  • Greetings Mr. Plimmer. Your description of two single beds pushed together is the standard hospitality beds that all hotel & motel operators used in New Zealand. They all come from the same source & should our beds are like wooden planks, then, all hotel & motel beds in New Zealand would be the same too? The geography of Timaru is that the railway line is part of our every day lives. Almost all motels in Timaru are by the railway line AND the major highway. And where would you suggest Timaru guests to go & stay then? It seems that you are a light sleeper & should that be the case, you can request for a room that's facing inwards rather than towards the street. The issue that we publicans have is that we are only told of the problem(s) AFTER checking-out and a rational thing to do is to inform us of your requests & we can attend to your needs immediately. It's a win-win for everybody. We are sorry to not have met your expectation. Regards, Ping LIM (The Proprietor)

  • Enjoyed the stay. We'd planned an overnight stop to make a journey more relaxed and tt worked really well. The free wi-fi meant catching up with email etc was easy, and the free breakfast was an unexpected bonus. Love the decor in the public parts of the hotel. Perhaps a table or desk, or even a smal coffee table, in the room would have been nice. But overall we loved the stay. . 5

LAUREN GABRIEL - Jun 14, 2012 (Stayed Jun 2012) Travelbug verified review
  • Thank you Ms. Gabriel for your comment. As the Grosvenor is a historical hotel, our hotel rooms are all distinctive with their own quirks. This hotel never professes to be an American-type hotel where it's bland, large & devoid of personality. The Grosvenor is progressively renewing its facilities over the years. Whilst some of the bathrooms are dated in appearance, they are still clean and tidy to use. Convenience is NOT compromised by any means. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and we are always truthful of our status. Qualmark has ranked us 3++ for a reason & after readers read the general rundown of the definition of star classification, we hope you can differentiate when a ranking is done emotively rather than objectively. We price ourselves accordingly to the market. Where else can you go these days where continental breakfast, wi-fi (up to 2 hours per day) are provided for free? For emergency purpose, we have shuttle van facility to assist our patrons. And here it goes: 5-Star Rating: A luxurious hotel, offering the highest degree of personal service. Elegance and style abound, and rooms are equipped with quality linens, VCR, CD stereo, jacuzzi tub and in-room video. There are multiple restaurants on site with extensive, gourmet menus, and room-service is also available 24-7. A fitness center, valet parking and concierge service round out the experience. 4-Star Rating: Formal, large hotels, with top-notch service. There will usually be other hotels of the same caliber clustered nearby, as well as shopping, dining and entertainment. Above-average service, beautifully furnished rooms, restaurants, room service, valet parking, fitness center and a concierge are some amenities to expect. 3-Star Rating: Usually located near a major expressway, business center and/or shopping area, these hotels offer nice, spacious rooms and decorative lobbies. On-site restaurants may be average in size but will offer breakfast, lunch and dinner. Valet and room service, a small fitness center and a pool are often available. 2-Star Rating: These hotels are generally part of a chain that offers consistent quality and limited amenities. They are small or medium in size and rooms will have a phone and TV. While you will not have the convenience of room service, there should be a small restaurant on site. 1-Star Rating: Expect a small hotel managed and operated by the owner. The atmosphere will be more personal and the accommodations basic. Restaurant service should be within walking distance, as well as nearby public transportation, major intersections and entertainment that is reasonable in price. Have a nice day, Ping (proprietor)

  • Interesting place - not what I expected inside. Rooms show no evidence of any heritage of the Grosvenor as it was. Decor was a bit stark for me & we could have done with another chair & small table in our room. There was plenty of space. Staff were very friendly & helpful & breakfast was good. Certainly value for money. 5

  • The room refurbishment was tastefully done, though unfortunately did not extend to the bathroom in our room - while everything was very clean, the bathroom fittings were quite dated. We thought the restaurant meals were nicely prepared and fairly priced, and welcomed that a continental breakfast was included in the room price. Overall, we were happy and would choose to stay at The Grosvenor again. 5

  • Well the refurbishment of this Grand Old Lady has been completed. Was very tidy. Good spacious room with everything that I required to make my stay very comfortable. There was a little lingering of odour from fresh paint in the passage way but otherwise you would not know that renovations had occurred. The food in the restaurant / bar was very good and a delight to dine in. This is not a michelan star restaurant but it was perfect for what my collegue and I wanted. (Very good food selection and quality at realist pricing 5
