  • Room in hotel was great with nice view to mt cook which we could see. Dinner in panorama was nice but object to paying extra for a few "seasonal" vegetables. Also noted they were vacuuming the alpine restaurant while guests were still eating at 9:30 pm. Still an absolutely fabulous place to stay for a special evening. 5

  • Very enjoyable stay. Great room with balcony facing mt cook. Very nice meal in the panorama restaurant on first night. It was my wife's birthday the second night and unfortunately the panorama room was booked up with a tour group which was disappointing but was looked after well in the alpine buffet. Gratis bottle of wine and a birthday cake and gift delivered to room which was a nice touch. She was happy which made me happy. One small negative was that the staff start setting up for breakfast in the buffet restaurant before guests are finished. Would stay again. 5

  • It was just perfect. Everything went as per the plan. The room, The service, The food and drinks. Top quality service and very helpful staff. We stayed in one of the premium rooms at level 9. The view was just awesome without any interruption. Just one thing to add that there is not much choice for the vegetarian people. 5

  • We stayed in a chalet, amazes me only window in the living area overlooks the car carpark not the views up to Mt Cook. Next time would stay in the main hotel. Friendly service, excellent restaurants but all very expensive, why prices are incresed over the summer periods in this industry seems incredibly greedy, no other business would get away with it. 5

  • On the whole very good and we will return. Did feel the restaurant meal was a little on the small side and a little too fancy which obscured the quality of the ingredients. One spring roll was burned to a crisp and should not have been served. Service in restaurant was perfect though. Also unhappy with service charge on breakfast. I know a lot of places do, but also a lot of equal or better quality and price do not. 3

  • We like the motel quality although we booked for two rooms family unit but turn-out to be 1 room and 1 hall unit. The services staffs are nice but as all my friends is doing the tours and my request for extending the check-out time to 12 noon was rejected unless I pay a charge of $25 per hours,I felt disappointed about it. Most of the 5 star hotel I stayed will try to do their best in allowing 1 to 3 hours of extension. 4

  • The MAGNIFICENT destination (Mt Cook, NZ) made up for any other deficiencies, however a hotel should stand on its own service not the view from the dining room. The dinner buffet was probably typical of large buffets, all show, no go, and my expectations were not high but I was still disappointed. The buffet carvery (roast meats) was Pork; NO LAMB (in NZ?) no Beef. A couple of curries and a swag of seafood, which neither my wife nor I eat. Unfortunately we don't eat Pork either. There must be a significant percentage of any population which for cultural or religious reasons don't eat Pork. The desserts, while pretty were bland, tasteless. There is an A LA CARTE RESTAURANT which was not obvious, or I did not notice from the on-line booking info, so thinking the buffet was the only dining option I pre-booked and pre-paid for that. BIG MISTAKE. 3

  • Staff very helpful but my wife had stayed at the Hermitage many years ago when it was just wonderful. The room was a little tired, the dining room was dreadful for the evening meal, it seemed to us it was set up for Asian visitors. Went to get some soup which was next to the rice and the bread rolls were at the other end of the dining room. Got some roast meat but the vegetables had run out so had to wait for them. The dining room was noisy and over crowded. It reminded us of a works canteen. Breakfast was better. 3

Price was excessive, but we would pay it again to repeat the experience! We thought about upgrading to a cooked breakfast, but found you only had USA style streaky bacon- Yuk! Surely you could have had better quality bacon like middle or back that hasn't been cooked to a cinder. 4

  • Dear Linda, Thank you for your feedback. I was concerned to read your comments regarding food poisoning. I would like to point out that we have not had any other complaints of food poisoning, also it takes between 24 hours and 5 days for any food poisoning to show it's effects and usually lasts for between 2 days and a week therefore I would suggest that the symptoms you suffered were not contracted via food poisoning and may have been a 12 hour bug that has been doing the rounds through NZ recently. I do feel for you and hope that you have recovered from this illness. Warm regards, Andrew Cleverley General Manager

  • The views from our room were truly magnificent. Service was generally good/professional and the Panorama Restaurant service and quality were outstanding (because they did not attract the touring groups!). However, we found the overall experience underwhelming, somewhat "massive" and impersonal. The Hermitage is clearly catering/aiming for groups/touring cars, not for individual visitors. That was particularly noticeable in the buffet restaurant (where breakfast was also provided) and the bar/cafe. It's a real pity as the accommodation is sufficiently expensive to expect something more personal and up-market. 3

  • We were very happy with our stay at The Hermitage at Mt Cook. The chalet was clean and met our needs. One minor comment we would like to make is that when we were told the dining choices ie either the a la carte restaurant or the buffet we were not told the price of price of the buffet or given any indication of the prices for the restaurant. Admittedly we should have asked but it wasn't volunteered. We searched for some indication amongst the literature in the chalet but couldn't find any. We decided upon the buffet and enjoyed the meal but it was only when we received the bill that we found out how much it cost. We were happy with the cost but found it frustrating that we had been unable to know it before hand. The price should be discretely mentioned somewhere as not everyone likes to be asking prices at the risk of looking cheap if they decide against it. Regards Robyn 5

The Hermitage Hotel
  • We arrived at the Hermitage and were pleasantly surprised when we found out we were upgraded to a suite. We found a spacious suite, with great views, along with a souvenir picture book in our room with a congratulations message. We had a wonderful time! 5

  • The hotel was very good, as were the staff. A nice place to relax and enjoy the views. The Panorama Restaurant, both in service and quality of food was superb. The Alpine restaurant buffet, although good in quality and variety in food, was an experience in itself. Probably because of the time of year, with the amount of customers, it felt chaotic and a free-for-all when it came to food service. 4

  • Good experience to have such a great location, it looks to me that most rooms have view to the mountains which is great. Christmas Dinner at the restaurant was great as experience despite the food flavours and slow service. 3
