  • Unfortunately we were very disappointed with our stay. The room was tired and shabby - wallpaper peeling off and threadbare carpet in a lot of places. The bathroom was in need of a major upgrade and needed some form of heating and the shower head was ridiculously low. The meal we had was awful. My main of fish and chips - the fish was still partially frozen and unedible and my husband's was also not very tasty. We would have been better off at the pub. The receptionist was not particularly welcoming or friendly and didn't know what she was doing. It was not a great experience and not enjoyable either especially when we were trying to relax in the spa and a group of bikkies were also in the area drinking which made me especially (being a lady) uncomfortable. We won't be back. 1

  • Very disappointed. The room was extremely cold, tired and shabby - wallpaper peeling off and threadbare carpet in places. A plug-in heater was noisy and didn't really help. The beds were clean and at least had electric blankets. For $15 extra per person, the breakfast was poor value, and there was no choice. The receptionist was not particularly welcoming or friendly. Like a previous reviewer, my first thought was also of 'fawlty towers'. We won't be back. 1

  • Great stay! stayed in the family room which was great for 2 adults and 2 kids! great having a heater in the room and electric blankets on all the beds. The spa in the hotel was awesome and even better that when you booked it, it was yours for an hour. We booked the dinner, bed and breakfast package which was great. The hotel staff were very friendly and the location was awesome. Great family weekend all round!!. 5

  • Thought we booked one of the new rooms, but that was not the case. Was pretty cold for a winter's night, a wet one at that. Disappointed in the deal that we booked - one night plus two breakfasts - when it was just toast and eggs. For $4 it could have included a full brekkie, but it wasn't even an option to upgrade. Best part was the spa, but an hour over two days being great wouldn't make us stay again. 1

  • We have stayed at this hotel before and again our stay was great. Not to everyone's taste as the hotel is a grand old lady, and shows her age but is clean and comfortable. We were a little disappointed as our last stay a few years ago we had a beautiful dinner and enjoyed time in the bar. This time there was no dinner and no bar! apparently they don't have a chef at the moment which is a shame but this was not 'advertised' in the hotel anywhere. A notice on reception or in the room would have been helpful. In saying that the breakfast was lovely. We will stay again sometime. 5

  • Returned to waitomo caves hotel to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary which we had honey-mooned there. Arriving from auckland late afternoon we booked in with a blunt and coolish receptionist ! after explaining we came to celebrate the afore-mentioned, the tone became warmer somewhat. Nevertheless the stay was pleasant and hardly a change to decor or furnishings in that long time since last visited. Room was quaint but cosy, plenty of shampoo , soap and nice towels .bed was desirably comfortable and arising out next morning was hard to leave.the ambience of the many stairways and long halls with walls displaying lovely new zealand scenery and huge maori portraits was great. We departed next day after a delightful breakfast in a nice morning dining area. The waitress couldnt do enough for us and even obliged with taking our photo. All in all, an interesting 19th century original hotel stay taking us back in time. Kind of like " faulty towers" without the comedy. 5

  • Fabulous old building which when fully restored (8 rooms currently undergoing restoration) will be magnificent. Lovely staff, nice breakfast,. When the restaurant is restored to dinners as well will be an asset. Not too far to walk to all local sights and the setting high on the hill has lovely views. The resident chicken brought a laugh to us. Only downside which is being addressed now is the aged decor and size of the rooms but it is an historic building . Would stay there again. 5

  • Pretty cool looking hotel, but probably could have done better for how much we paid, but guess we paid for the historical aspect and location. It was very beautiful, grand and old. All wall paper, fittings etc were old and vintage which was pretty cool. Everyone who worked there was lovely and happy to help. Easy check in and check out and location-wise it was so close to the caves and a few restaurants and cafes. Our room was pretty small and was a little dark for my liking, but added to the atmosphere. With the hotel being so dated, it was pretty creaky and you could hear everything, from people talking to the doors opening and closing and the floor boards underfeet. All and all it was beautiful and the staff were friendly, but personally i'd have preferred something a bit more modern. 1

  • After a surprisingly cold initial welcome we found other staff friendly and very helpful. Downstairs room with some upstairs noise (creaking floorboards) but we coped! obviously the old girl has been neglected and it was good to see some efforts being made to restore her. (suggest they keep an eye on the fire escape stairway as it was starting to show rust.) enjoyable meals. We stayed two nights and the room was clean and presentable on arrival but wasn't serviced the next day. When we mentioned that we were quickly given fresh towels and cafe supplies (and an extra chair) - thanks! :) a fantastic area of nz with so much to do - recommend people stay longer and check out the options. Pity it was raining so couldn't do as many walks. (also) enjoyed our visit to roselands and to otorohanga baptist church. . 5

  • The Waitomo Caves Hotel was a comfortable night's accommodation with friendly staff. The Hotel is showing its age and needs some $'s spent to bring it back to the grandueur that it once would have had. Still, for the price and being close in to the caves, it exceeded my expectations. 4

The view from the hotel grounds is beautiful, as well as the grounds themselves. a short walk to Waitomo Village for coffee, or gift shops. We did not take advatage of the dinner, but the dining room looked very elegant. We did have the continental breakfast and it was adequate. We would stay here again. 5

Small things could help improve the experience for guests - more rubbish bins in rooms, a wider variety of music playing in dining room but overall a good stay. 4

  • The staff were very kind and tried to do their best for us..but hotel badly wants refurbishing and updating...tv was old and on the verge of breaking down, heaters ancient and there was very little hot water for our showers...no electric blanket on the bed. Otherwise, the basic bones of the hotel were beautiful and could be again, the dining room and big fire was lovely, and with a new lounge suite, would rival the Chateau!! Hot spa maybe, in te future? After being underground all day?? Thanks. P Tupp and family 5

The price for three to stay there was over-rated. It was hot in the room and we could not open the windows without letting a lot of bugs in. A fan or something would have been nice.
