  • What a perfect spot! We will be back. Our only complaints were the wasps and the weed. Wasps - most of our group got stung a couple of times. Luckily I had some ointment to minimise the damage, however we hadn't taken fly spray nor citronella candles. We found one wasp nest and with permission from the Water Taxi man, poured petrol down the nest. However that only diminished the wasp population by about 10%. Weed - we didn't mind the weed too much however four of our children were playing in the weed very happily. The next day they all developed a severe rash all over their exposed skin. The rash burned and blistered, making all four quite miserable for at least 3 days. A fellow camper said it was possibly "duck itch". I felt a warning sign would have been a good idea, as more campers with smaller children would not have known about the rash risk if we hadn't have warned them. 4

  • WVCT were great on the phone and prompt on the email responses. Being able to book on line saves lots of potential hassles i.e. getting there and no sites available.... Big improvement to the system 5

  • Absolutely exceeded all my expectations. Jo and Jason at the camp site were utterly top-shelf brilliant people. The water taxi driver was the best I've come across - WOW!. The beautiful Maori lady who helped me at The Landing is everything any tourism operator or any country could ever seek or want for. It was 10yrs since coming bk to NZ and all these folk plus the ease of booking made the trip (albeit being too short - wish I could have stayed much much longer) amazing. Australia is so very far behind the ball game when it comes to sincere and honest service and they respect the land. WOW is all I can say. I love NZ!! 5

  • We booked site number 30 for the night of 1/1/13-2/1/13. We arrived and instantly struggled to pitch our tent as the spot is not flat and is extremely small. Our tent is small anyway (3-person tent) so we should have been able to find somewhere to pitch it but it was pretty difficult to find a flat spot. In short, the spot we booked wasn't up to scratch. Luckily, some other campers saw us struggling to pitch our tent and invited us over to share their spot which was flat. Otherwise we would have struggled. Toilets are near full and don't appear to being cleaned. There is a strong raw sewerage smell around the toilets and on nearby tent sites. Several people seemed to be quite unhappy about this. We've stayed at many DoC campsites over the years and never seen long drops/toilets in such a state as the ones at this site. We're used to roughing it but other people and especially tourists might not be so happy with the state of the toilets. There is no drinking water. Or at least the drinking water that is available is infested with little bugs/insects. Not really a good look. The water has to be in better condition. We were very lucky with how generous people were as a family gave us a 20L bladder of water to use. If we hadn't been so well looked after we would have been stuck with only 1 L between us to last the night, breakfast and the walk out. We could have boiled lake water but we would have used all our gas and not had enough to make our meals... The availability of water has to be clearer. If the water is going to be so bad, it needs to be stated on the campsite's page on the DoC website so that people bring enough water or fuel to boil lake water. 2

  • Had a lovely time at the camp over New Years. Absolutely beautiful place. My only issue would be the toilet facilities. There are only two toilet facilities operational (which are very clean and tidy)at the camp as the other one has been shut down. I understand DOC are no longer maintaining these toilets. This needs to be sorted out for hygiene reasons and also for the camp. Other than that had a great time and will definitely be back. 4

  • Ssssh dont tell everyone, its perfect, skiing, views, pristine water, lovely campsite over looking the lake. Unfortunately now the booking system in place the free loaders are camping in the lovely hot pool area for free and leaving their rubbish and also above the rock hot pools. Stop being cheapskates! 5

  • The new process for booking is good because you are sure of a site when you arrive and prevents overcrowding. The kids really enjoyed the hot pools and the fishing was awesome. The only downside was the noise from the wakeboarders V8 engined boats are very loud and the whole campsite vibrates from them. We will go back again another time 5
