Waitomo Caves Hotel provides a taste of the early 19th Century grand tour hotel experience in our own time.

Majestically positioned on a promontory above the Waitomo village and the world famous Waitomo caves the hotel offers sweeping views across the lush farmland, the hills and bush of South Waitako.

Waitomo Caves Hotel is not for those of you seeking the modern sterile chic rather this is a sedate haven of faded décor, doubtful 60's renovations, sparkling crystal chandeliers, spacious clean rooms, deliciously comfortable beds and deep armchairs. Come and rest and relax, read, sip wine, and just simply hang out with us.

Planned renovations may alter this glimpse of the past era irrevocably so be sure to visit us now to experience the difference and the unique ambiance before it is too late.

The Hotel offers a large and very pleasant formal dining-room overlooking the terrace and the Rose gardens. The restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner 7 days a week.

The management and staff are largely locally employed, friendly and helpful and will try to cater for your needs especially if you provide some notice of your needs – remember we are out in the countryside here.

Relax and chat to friends or other guests in the cozy bar or on the adjacent terrace.

An absolutely ideal and affordable Hotel weekend away – just 1 hour from Hamilton and 2 or so hours from Auckland – just off State Highway one with pleasant towns like Otorohonga and Te Kuiti close by.

  • What makes a place good no matter the decor is staff. Unfortunately the staff here were as cold as the old building. We wouldn't return. . 1

  • Stayed in one of the nice rooms that had a recent facelift. The whole hotel has a lot of character. Did not catch a glimpse of any ghosts though... . 5

  • We had a delightful stay with helpful and friendly staff at the grand old dame; as described by others as rather shabby but to us that is part of the charm . We enjoyed our meals there. 5

  • Unfortunately we were very disappointed with our stay. The room was tired and shabby - wallpaper peeling off and threadbare carpet in a lot of places. The bathroom was in need of a major upgrade and needed some form of heating and the shower head was ridiculously low. The meal we had was awful. My main of fish and chips - the fish was still partially frozen and unedible and my husband's was also not very tasty. We would have been better off at the pub. The receptionist was not particularly welcoming or friendly and didn't know what she was doing. It was not a great experience and not enjoyable either especially when we were trying to relax in the spa and a group of bikkies were also in the area drinking which made me especially (being a lady) uncomfortable. We won't be back. 1

  • Very disappointed. The room was extremely cold, tired and shabby - wallpaper peeling off and threadbare carpet in places. A plug-in heater was noisy and didn't really help. The beds were clean and at least had electric blankets. For $15 extra per person, the breakfast was poor value, and there was no choice. The receptionist was not particularly welcoming or friendly. Like a previous reviewer, my first thought was also of 'fawlty towers'. We won't be back. 1

  • Great stay! stayed in the family room which was great for 2 adults and 2 kids! great having a heater in the room and electric blankets on all the beds. The spa in the hotel was awesome and even better that when you booked it, it was yours for an hour. We booked the dinner, bed and breakfast package which was great. The hotel staff were very friendly and the location was awesome. Great family weekend all round!!. 5

  • Thought we booked one of the new rooms, but that was not the case. Was pretty cold for a winter's night, a wet one at that. Disappointed in the deal that we booked - one night plus two breakfasts - when it was just toast and eggs. For $4 it could have included a full brekkie, but it wasn't even an option to upgrade. Best part was the spa, but an hour over two days being great wouldn't make us stay again. 1
