Welcome to Mahitahi Lodge at Bruce Bay - the gateway to glacier country.
Magnificent rimu forests surround this sandy picturesque bay. Situated 30 minutes south of Fox Glacier, Bruce Bay has many historical features. The legendary Polynesian explorer Maui was said to have first landed here. Honouring this cultural heritage, the local runanga have recently built a marae. Remnants of timber milling and gold mining can also be found.
John and Jacqui purpose built Mahitahi Lodge as luxury eco accommodation in 2005. It features many of the West Coast's native timber, within its architecture and furniture, making it a very welcoming place to stay.
The lodge is a marvelous place to ‘unwind' and just simply relax. It is only 5 minutes walk from the Mahitahi River and Bruce Bay beach where on a clear day you can view Mt Cook.
We pride ourselves on making our guests feel ‘at home'. The native timber features ensure the lodge provides that ‘welcoming' feel upon your arrival.
• Walking along the beach with no-one else in sight
• Kayaking a secluded river surrounded by native rain forest where all you hear is the sound of the birds
• Waking up to the birds singing in the mornings
• Fabulous sunsets
Activities can be arranged free of charge at your request. Tours include glacier heli flights, jet boat trips and hunting large game to name a few. You can even go to Milford Sound from here on a day trip helicopter flight and boat cruise. Local activities include salmon and trout fishing, sea fishing, kayaking and walking, and, of course, John's tour.
Get away from it all, no need to queue for meals at peak times, you have it all here, and being near the coast the sunshine hours are improved.
