At Akaroa Stargazing, we believe that the universe shouldn't just be looked at—it should be felt. We are a 100% family-owned and operated company born from a lifelong passion for the night sky. Based in the heart of the historic French village of Akaroa, just 90 minutes from Christchurch, we offer some of New Zealand’s most intimate and technologically advanced astronomy experiences.

Our Story: Passion in Every Orbit

Our journey began with our founder, Luca, who spent years as an Astronomy Guide at the world-renowned University of Canterbury Mt John Observatory in Lake Tekapo. Driven by a desire to share the magic of the heavens in a more personal, relaxed setting, Luca and his partner Manon founded Akaroa Stargazing in 2022. Today, along with our son Eros—our youngest apprentice stargazer—we invite you to step into our world and see the universe through our eyes.

We don’t just point at stars; we tell their stories. Our tours are designed to be a conversation between friends, blending high-level science with the rich traditions of Tātai Arorangi (Māori Astronomy).

• Pristine Dark Skies: We operate in the stunningly dark environment of the Banks Peninsula, offering a clear window into the Southern Cross, the Milky Way, and distant galaxies far from city light pollution.
• Cutting-Edge Technology: We use a dual-telescope system. Peer through our powerful 10-inch Dobsonian telescope for breathtaking visual depth, and witness live astrophotography with our ZWO Seestar S50 smart telescope.
• Digital Memories: We believe the magic should stay with you. On our evening tours, we capture live high-resolution images of nebulae and take a personalized portrait of you under the stars, sent directly to your inbox as a digital souvenir.
• All-Weather Innovation: Space doesn't stop for the clouds. If the weather doesn't cooperate, our "Space Voyager" indoor experience uses state-of-the-art virtual technology to take you on a journey through the rings of Saturn and beyond.
