Base yourself at The Portage and experience a little taste of everything Marlborough has to offer. The Portage is an ideal 1 to 2 night stay hotel from where you can enjoy winery tours from Picton; cruising the Marlborough Sounds; walking or cycling New Zealand’s famous Queen Charlotte Track; wildlife eco-tours; sea kayaking; and fishing and sailing on Kenepuru Sound. Tell us your favourite adventure activity when you make a reservation and we'll arrange it for you as we hire in the equipment and guides from Picton. Advance bookings preferred.

The property is set amongst a rustic landscape of native plants with an abundance of birdlife to be seen as you submerge yourself into the nature. Relax, unwind and switch off from the rest of the world and enjoy being in a remote part of the Sounds, turn off your phone and simply enjoy your surroundings.

Food options range from the slightly more formal setting of The Portage Restaurant & Bar to the laid-back Snapper Bar and Eatery on the beach-front. Both venues offer an alfresco dining option and have spectacular views of the famous sunken valleys and lush rainforests of the Marlborough Sounds.

Located 10 minutes walk from the acclaimed Queen Charlotte Track, The Portage offers several accommodation options including the premium Tui and Kereru Suites; the two-room elevated Korimako Suites; and the cosy Weka Rooms.

The Portage hotel's central location in Marlborough makes it an easy reach from all over New Zealand - being 15 minutes from Picton by ferry or 1.25 hours by road. Blenheim Airport has multiple flights from the major cities of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch every day and is a 25 minute road trip from Picton.

The Portage is your Marlborough accommodation base to explore the magic of the Marlborough Sounds at the top of the south island of New Zealand.

  • Service v.good: friendly and helpful. Food at dinner also excellent quality and reasonably priced for the venue. Breakfast choices a bit limited, but it was early in the season and the hotel was fairly quiet. 5

  • We stayed in the "walkers lodge" and it was great, we had free use of the spa and the view from the bunk was amazing, the staff were really helpful and booked our water taxi for us, the only slight downside was the choice of food available at the snapper cafe for the prices paid, everything else made up for it though. 5

  • This hotel is ideal for any couples that want to get away from it all. From what I could see, all of rooms had a view, they were very clean and up to date. We caught the water taxi to the hotel, would recommend doing the same, otherwise its a long drive from Picton. Lots to see and do, or you can just sit back and relax 5

  • Considering we stayed in low season and there were very few guests we were treated very well. We were pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to a spa bath suite which was lovely. The staff were all very professional and while, given the number of guests, the dinner menu was limited to the all day menu (no problems by us!!) the food was fantastic. But breakfast - wow! what a plateful!!! I had never been to the Portage or driven the road but I was pleasantly surprised at the scenery. Well done team & thank you for the experience. 5

  • The Portage is in a truely spectacular location, with beautiful views across the Sounds. We took advantage of the conference facilities and the staff were helpful and attentive. Our rooms were smallish, but the beds were very comfortable and it was a good nights sleep. We also enjoyed a great meal at the restaurant and the Blue Cod comes highly recommended. 5
