Waitangi Treaty Grounds

Stand on the spot where New Zealand’s founding document – the Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti
o Waitangi) - was signed on 6 February 1840, and find out more about how this document
has forged the unique land that we now call Aotearoa New Zealand.

Enjoy strolling through one of New Zealand’s great beauty spots with its panoramic views of
the Bay of Islands. See the historic Treaty House, the magnificently carved meeting house
and the world’s largest ceremonial war canoe. Explore our brand new, state of the art
Museum of Waitangi, opened on 7 February 2016. Take in the ground floor exhibition Ko
Waitangi Tenei (This is Waitangi) with its multi-media displays and significant taonga
(treasures), and first floor gallery exhibition.

Sit back and watch the introductory film in the Visitor Centre, browse the quality selection in the
gift shop and enjoy a delicious lunch at Whare Waka Café.

Experience all Waitangi Treaty Grounds has to offer by day with the all-inclusive Day Pass
which includes an informative Guided Tour and high-energy Cultural Performance, while our
Hangi & Concert will top off a summer’s evening perfectly with a themed intimate
experience not to be missed.

Allowing 3-4 hours is recommended.

  • I was very impressed with my visit. The staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming - it started as soon as I walked through the front door! Our tour guide, Dan, was friendly, informative, and fun. The opportunity to wander the grounds and learn about the Treaty was excellent. 4

  • What a breathtaking location. We felt very humbled by what we did not know about the treaty and its importance to the Maori people. The method of story telling and the legends preformed through dance and music where a great way to share the Maori story and their future place in New Zealand. 5
